The Childcare Business Matters Workshop held on Monday 24th July 2017, at PwC’s Sydney Office was a huge success! In the end 40 savvy childcare investors, owners and operators gathered to hear our experts talk on the hottest topics in the industry today including identifying areas of over-supply versus areas of need, structuring your childcare portfolio and strategies to maximise and market your investments.

Here’s a run down of what our experts shared this time round… 

Belinda Ludlow – CEO Explore & Develop – Belinda has over 20 years experience  in the service franchising sector working in most aspects of franchising including operational management, recruitment, field support, site sourcing, lease negotiation, sales and marketing.   Belinda joined Explore & Develop 5 years ago as a Commercial Operations Manager and recently moved into the CEO role. Belinda lives and breathes the Explore & Develop culture as a customer (her daughter attended an Explore & Develop service), and as co-franchise owner with her husband, Paul, the Director of the Castlereagh Street, Sydney service. Opening the Castlereagh Street service gave her a great appreciation for the journey of a small business owner in the Early Childhood Education and Care sector and exactly what it takes to thrive in a highly competitive market.

In this case study Belinda sharesd her insights into Explore & Develop’s unique franchise business model, journey of growth and how they are breaking new ground as the leading franchise in the childcare sector.

 

Phil Henry – Managing Director, Business Geographics. In this session Phil gave us an insight into how he produces detailed Needs Assessment reports for childcare centre developers, managers and operators for developments and acquisitions and showed us why this up-to-date market intelligence is vital whether you own one or twenty centres.
Phil has a hands-on approach, working closely with the leading names in child care industry to provide detailed assessments of supply and demand at a local area level. In the current climate of regional over-supply we believe that this presentation is a must see for any current or potential owner or investor.

 

Simon Fox, Herron Todd White – In this workshop Simon took us you through the process of valuation and explain the importance of a professional valuation for childcare investors and owner operators in decision making and the current economic impacts on the sector.
Drawing on up-to-the-minute national data on sales, rentals, yields and values and catering for all aspects of property valuation including mortgage security valuations, project analysis, due diligence, feasibility studies and pre-purchase advice, Simon’s knowledge is at the cutting edge of the industry.

 

Tamara Brown, Partner – Private Clients, PwC Australia –  Tamara is a trusted advisor who works with privately owned organisations, family groups and entrepreneurs to help them grow and realise value. Her keys areas of focus include; Business growth services – development of strategy, business models, financial forecast modelling, helping clients realise efficiencies, drive profit and free up cash flow.
Tamars’s presentation covered structuring your investments, expanding your portfolio to maximise stability and growth. Structuring – design and implementation of your child care portfolio to maximise asset protection, facilitate the effective flow of funds and achieve your goals.

 

Amar Jassal, PWC – M&A / Cap Raise Specialist – Emerging Company Mentor and Board Director. Amar has significant international experience working with Emerging companies, Family Business, Corporate and Private Equity clients including experience in some of the child care sector’s biggest mergers and acquisitions. His specialities include; buy and sell side Mergers and Acquisitions expertise, capital raising, strategic and business improvement, mentoring owners of start ups and emerging companies. In his presentation Amar discussed developing a business and child care investment strategy and showcasing PwC’s Heat Mapping tool to guide investment decisions.

 

Kate Julius, Partner – Private Clients, PwC Australia – Kate has over 20 years experience in working with and advising private organisations and their stakeholders, to help them make better decisions. Kate advises Boards and owners on how through technology you can simplify and focus insight for better decision-making, with real time data. Kate spoke on cloud accounting platforms and the benefits of realtime information for decision making, understanding and monitoring your business drivers and budgeting.

 

Jane Toohey – Owner and Director of Outsource to Us. Jane has worked with clients across all industries including the child care sector and specialises in growing businesses through smart marketing. Jane develops integrated strategies linked with effective tactical plans which are simple, understandable and hence, fully implemented across all mediums. Her specialties include; branding, digital communications, cross channel campaign management, growth strategies, leadership and integrated marketing.
Jane’s hot topics included: smarter marketing strategies for child care providers within a competitive landscape. Maximising your brand online. Geo-targeting for strategic lead generation. Local Area Marketing tactics and how to convert leads into enrolments to maximise your marketing spend!

The day closed with a frank and fearless discussion panel where our experts fielded any questions relating to the child care sector.
